Media problem
I bet you've heard the news about the SWINE flu or H1N1. Also, how they argue what it should be called, since it really doesn't come from eating pig. Whatever its called, it has kept many under an umbrella of paranoia. YOu go to markets, restaurants, heads turn as they hear a cough. Even at work places, if you are sick "stay home". I dearly, can't stand all of these exaggeration. It is the flu. So what? we live in a developed country.

Swine Flu
As of right now i havn't really picked a topic that i'm going to stick with but as of now i have no choice. I guess i'm going to go with the whole "Swine Flu" issue. Since this is one of the biggest news stories of the week. For the past couple of days this is all i have been hearing and how it can be deadly if it is not treated. I had heard it started in Mexico and it is working it's way to the United States. The reason for this is that people are visiting relatives who live in mexico and are catching it there and bringing it back over hear. Which is really scary. This could turn into such a huge thing that it's hard to have an opinion on it. I guess the best thing would be for people to try to stay away from mexico as long as possible untill this whole thing goes away or something.
Laker Basketball
To stand in the way of your own success is idiotic. Lakers basketball I love it but what i do not love is the Lakers forth quarter, coasting method. Tuesday, against Utah in the first round of the playoffs, the Lakers were winning by twenty-two points at the start of the forth quarter, which is good and bad for Laker fans.
If you are not a die hard Laker fan you will not see the problem in the Lakers winning by twenty-two points but if you know the Lakers like I know the Lakers, then that extremely large lead does not mean anything.
The Lakers manage to blow large leads....

False Left.
How sad, how strange. With the election over in nothing as oh so convoluted as what happened in '04, I find myself a bit...sad. More angry than sad, honestly, but the sadness is there. Black. Well...more of a light grey. See what I did there, English Way? I can rhyme but have no time, moving on. The reason for such sadness is the left, that which holds a majority in the house and senate, and of course controls the executive branch. One would think that with the blatant anti-intellectualism that went on in the republican branch, and the insanity of the last 8 years that I can only honestly describe as fucking retarded...one would think there would be a new age of thought and emphasis on the growth of the mind. I wish this were true, but it is not. The right seems very RIGHT to me, but the left...it seems centrist at best. The things that I care about are not voiced as clearly or as strongly as I would like. The very idea of Obama scoffing at the legalization of marijuana is predictable, but all the same lamentable. Political suicide, maybe...but times are tough. There needs to be a hard ass that says "Hey, we can't play this game anymore." But I think we all know that isn't happening in this President, as much as I like and respect him. But he plays it too safe, when in the past 8 years the last administration did everything but. And the torture that went on...that which actually made me memorize how to spell the word, it isn't being handled in the correct way, in my mind. Is it what the Nazis did? Is it what Imperial Japan did? No, and iffy no respectively. But it is certainly a step too far. There should be some powerful leftest that says "Hey, that is NOT ok, and you KNEW it wasn't ok!". Try to get the nation back to harmony, instead of covering it up as "partisan". Sadly, we see nothing of that from the democrats, like always. Dumb ideas or no ideas? Apathy usually does less damage than extreme retardation, but it's funny how life works sometimes.

construction deaths
I always knew that construction could be a dangerous job to persue but i never knew there were so many deaths involved in it. The stories that the people told about some of the workers were horrifiying. The video had told a story of all these people that died that once had a family.
4/22/09
While watching this multimedia project the most things that i found was compelling was the fact how they had biographies of all the workers that died and why and where and how they died. The most effective thing to me was the fact that they had people like their relatives to talk about the situation and how they felt about it and what they should do to prevent these type of things from happening to anyone else.
Construction Deaths
There were so many interesting facts in the story that were compelling. The way the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) dismissed the cases against the contractors was eye-opening. One construction worker, Harold Billingsley, died after falling, and OSHA didn't even cite his employer for numerous of violations, and they would remove the few citations they did assess after later meetings with the contractors.
I liked the simplicity of it, how it has a picture with the lead below it, and you can click to the slideshow, video or the interactive map. And as you scroll down you see links to different articles with different angles on the subjects. To that end, it gave me a new idea on our project: simpler is better. A slideshow with caption, a video, and the lead in text is most of what the project needs, and you can add other content as needed and as you flesh it out.

Berzon's Multimedia Story
The part that I fought the most compelling was the video portion. I thought that it was really smart to use the aspects of the wives who husbands had died, ex-workers, and the current workers. I also liked how they increased the speed whenever they were showing the construction site. Idk y i just did. Interactive portion effected me the most because it showed who died where and how they died.
wow..
I really liked this multimedia project to be honest i though it was going to be like all the other ones that we watched. I think that the simplicity of the Multimedia story made it a big success. My favorite portion was that of the interactive accidents on the strip, it showed the actual way that these victims got into accidents and died. It was kind of like being in the personal level with them, knowing exactly how these accidents occured.
The slide show pictures were amazing, but i believe it needed a little bit of audio, maybe melancholic music or something.
The slide show pictures were amazing, but i believe it needed a little bit of audio, maybe melancholic music or something.
Construction
I found the multimedia project to be pretty much successful in message and delivery. What I personally found most complelling was the diagrams of each of the 12 worker's accidents. So often in mainstream media the details of an accident are either poorly explained or not explained at all. To see what happened in a simple to understand picture makes the possibility of death and it's ease on the job much more impactful. Least compelling was probably the slide show, simply because some of the slides were not readily apparent in message or purpose. Dehumanized text is extremely effective to me, in that it shows that these workers deaths are not much more than numbers.
Construction Deaths, Multimedia Project
It all depends on the information you have, if you have good facts and interviews thats most important, then you choose the best way to tell the story. I liked the interactive part in this project but I thought the video was to long.
4/22/09
What I found most intersting about Berzon's multimedia story was the amount of organized information the story has. It made me understand what is really going on in the expansion of such companies and how it does not matter how many human lives are lost at the expense of enterprise. The videos where the most effective along with the interviews with affected family members. I learned to show the human emotion and not try to hide it while either interviewing or taking photographs..
Journal 4/22/09
What I found most compelling about Berzon's multimedia story was the interactive feature that examined nine deaths on the strip. It just made it more personal and pulled you in because it placed faces on the story. Seeing some of the people who died makes it much stronger.
The least compelling thing was the video. It was far too long and monotone. It's five minutes long and isn't as interest grabbing or interesting as everything else. The slideshow wasn't that great either. Captions would have helped for us to know what the picture was and why it was important.

April 20th
I think we are going into a dark age were there will be to much information and not enough attention span to handle it all. I know that there is nothing we as a society can really do about it. Its only a matter of time before we all burn out. With everyone multi tasking there will be the downfall over society
entering a dark age
yes, unfortunatly i agree we are entering a dark age with the whole computer generation because there is so much information that we discover such as facebook and myspace and that we can't capture alot of the new findings that we as people and as a whole generation find. I guess there could be benefits to so much information because having alot of info you can find and study one thing that you are interested in.
heck yeah
We are entering the a "Dark Age". <- MY THOUGHT
we are driven by time and harsh competition. There is even laws enforcing compassion and niceness.
For example: Since many elderly are being neglected @ the bus. BUS regulations say: you must give away your seat to an elderly person. OR else be fined. What the hell? Shouldn't that be common courtesy?? Why must we be reminded?
Also..the Internet has become our new friend-enemy.
We don't make lasting relationships but short ones.
We like to make many friends at once through a click of a button. etc...

I don't think we're entering a "Dark Age" because we have too much info and not enough attention span. There are plenty of people who have good attentions spans and why should we limit the information to them? If someone isn't interested in the information, that's their decision. It's better to have too much info than have too little info in my opinion. It's more beneficial to have a lot of info so it's readily available when it's needed. The potential benefits far outweigh the costs.
Dark Age???
I dont know if I agree that we are entering into a dark age or not. I do beleive times are changing for the worst though because of the extent amounts of electonics. However, on the journalism aspect I think that it's better to know a little about everything then it is to know a lot about little. If people consume some of the news that is being put into the multimedia projects, i think that is more benefical in the long run then to know nothing.
Well I-...wait, wha?
Dark age? Meh. I do not believe so. It makes no sense to me that a lack of knowledge can be borne from a overproduction of information. One merely has to pay attention. The good thing about so much knowledge is that it can be cross referenced with ease and accuracy. If the workplace is losing money due to interuptions, the workplace should streamline itself so that such interuptions are minimized. Complete destruction of such would be ideal, but impossible without robots that are extremely expensive and ultimately Japanese. Attention span can be blamed on the nature of The News. When a big story hits, there is no true weight placed on it. When no story exists, an equal amount of weight is placed on the droll and uninteresting. Oh, a cat show! How wonderful. Cough up a hairball and die, see if it changes anything.
Cocaine could be effective. Coffee clearly isn't cutting it.
Cocaine could be effective. Coffee clearly isn't cutting it.
"Dark Age"
Are We entering a "Dark Age"? Yes we are in the process of totally diconnecting ourselves from each other, we are entering a worl were everybody is either listening to their ipod, texting, or any other gadget. No longer do we talk to each other like we used to, as the days of diolouge are over, now its all about being an individual. We are all guilty of having so much information feed to us that we become brainwashed and start to train our brains to learn something for a short while then filter it rigth out.

Ethical Dilemmas?
She the reporter was very close to the victim... I would of done the best job possible and thats exactly what Julia Dahl did...
Some ethical dilemmas for me would be the event for me personally hits close to home, and it is affecting my hometown community at the moment.
Some ethical dilemmas for me would be the event for me personally hits close to home, and it is affecting my hometown community at the moment.
Ethical Dilemmas
What are some of the ethical dilemmas faced by the journalist in this piece? What would you have done in her situation? What are some potential ethical dilemmas as you work on your own project?
The main ethical dilemma is that the journalist has to sacrifice some of the reality of her piece (Tyeisha's untimely death) in order to get it presented to a large-scale audience. She talks about Fox wanting to present a story of "big-city girl gets caught up in a small-town murder," and how it made her feel like a "subject," much like Tyeisha was a subject to her. She brings up some interesting points, and in her shoes I would feel awkward too. If my story was changed and reported differently -- inaccurately -- to reach a "target audience," I would feel belittled as a journalist. There is a lack of artistic integrity in that; a journalist is supposed to tell the truth, not craft a particular story arc for the media.
An ethical dilemma for our own project would be the balance of objectivity considering I am a participant / fan of the game myself, so I have to make sure I'm fair and balanced and not just inserting my own point of view in the project.

Ethics??
This story was very compelling, it made me realize that being a journalist can sometimes become very personal. She was only trying to be a voice for this girl and it became a story about herself. She had to decide weather or not this was going to be a good way to address this issue. Obviously she decided to do it because it was the only way that the story was going to be told. Another ethical issue was that of the families. What would the family think of the story being turned around? I would have probably done the same thing. The story obviously needed to be told, but no one seemed to care about what had happened.
In my project it is difficult to say what ethical issues might arise. Might be the fact that the story is going to be told from an outside point of view, and the person I am profiling might not like it.

Morality. (Or how I learned to stop worrying and love Prop 8)
The journalist is told to take the substance and unique individuality of the people she writes about and turn it into an easy to understand, simple little story with no loose ends or critical thinking, or to something with corrupted point of view to the point of becoming a lie. I don't think I could pull it off, honestly. I have enough trouble with essays as it is, as unemotional and boring as they are. Potential ethical dilemmas are with, of course, a freakout. Still have not found anyone willing. Sink or swim time, I'm thinking, and I have 3 other classes to worry about. Things are stressful. Do I show everything? Do I cut out what may be too shocking? Am I obligated to take out what the subject would deem too personal or damaging? I don't know. How very unsound. My thoughts are Hawaiian.
What are the ethical dilemmas faced?
First the story does not really fit into the type of magazine she wants to summit it to. I think that she also finds it hard to write stories where the editor will change the story or add pictures to grab the readers attention. She also thought that the story did not fit the fiction to the magazine. There was no cause and effect to the story of Tyeisha. If this was my story I would have done all I possible could have done to help find the murder of this girl. Kind of what she did by even making the story a Little about her and taking a filming crew to Tyeisha's family. But, as far as the story for a magazine i would have not pursued it. I don't know of anything that might bug people about my story other than maybe seeing that there animals are at the facility and have not been adopted.
Ethical Dilemmas
In, The Lives of Others. there are several ethical dilemmas that Julia Dahl faces. In the beginning shes faces the problem with her stories and that they have no place to fit. She has problems moving from companies and her hard work equallying to nothing. Later on I think is her biggest dilemma when she is featured in a television series about her search about her old article. In this the people falsely portray her of doing such things like, shopping in rich places that she cant even afford. If I was her I wouldn't have let those camera people tell me what to do becasue journalism is real not staged. In my project I could possibly face people that get interviewed and then after it's all said and dont they decide they didn't want to be on my multimedia project after all. Or, people that get mad becasue they didn't want to be recorded or have pictures taken of them.
Journal 4/8/09
There are so many ethical dilemmas faced by the journalist in this piece. Most editors not wanting to publish a story because it's not "entertaining," the editors that were willing to let the story be told wanted it sugar-coated. Rather than focusing on the girl who is the subject of the story, they wanted to make it glamorous and fun for readers. They made the story about the writer, and not even truthfully. They wanted to make the writer more entertaining as well.
I would have sent my story, the real, non sugar-coated, and worthy story to every publication big and small. If they wouldn't publish it, I would take matters into my own hands. Spread the word by print the story and passing it out and blogging about it. Grassroots efforts often pay off. And if enough interest is created, then maybe the more widely read publications will publish the story untouched so more people can read Tyeisha's story.
I can't think of many potential ethical dilemmas as I work on my project because our project is more educational and informative than an "expose" type of story. Just making sure we fact check and give right information and credit to our sources.

I really enjoyed this piece "The Lives of Others". It was very interesting and it had many ethical issues within the piece. For instance this piece was written during the time of Hurrican Katrina. There was many that said that the Black people in the area were not helped as early as they should have been. Even with that being said its still a big understatement. During that time crime was still very high and this is possibley why tyeshia was murdered. The journalist had to also be careful not to "poke at her pain" as she said refering to the mother of tyeshia. This was a pretty difficult subject because she can't ask for to much being that her daughter was just murdered. Overall this was one of the best pieces I've read in this class. I'm not too sure if I will run into any ethical dilemmas with my particular subject. Being that it can be a sad subject just being careful how I address people if they had lost a pet would be beneficial.

Story on a Demonstration
4/06/09
It is hard to forsee how exactly will do but I am thinking that we will start with a little history to present the person/demonstration, the story is about and why it is important and valuable to know about the event or the person that the demonstration is about.
Then I think we will follow with some video of the demonstration and hopefully get some good quotes on people commenting at the demonstration.
Ending will follow up any effects that could be viewed today. How this person's life long ago, affected people today, hoping to somehow relate the viewers to the story.

How are you going to make your audience interested in the story you are telling? Why should they care?
So the goal is to show our subjects as people, not just video game players...
"Legitimize the hobby..."
-- Interesting personalities
-- Illustrate what skills the players get out of it (social, physical, mental)
-- Demonstrate the validity of the hobby in general (professional gamers in Korea; Ken landing a Survivor deal, Major League Gaming, etc.)
-- Highlight the community
The lead is vital here -- we have to hook the audience immediately. Photographs also help since the game is visually appealing. If it's well made, we can make the audience interested.

Audience
Such fickle things people are. They want this, this, this, and possibly that...but keep them the HELL away from this. Length is a factor. Sanity has to be a factor. I don't know what I'm going to do into this. I had planned on recording most of if not the entire trip. Perhaps audio would be better for that aspect. Perhaps not. It depends on the happenings. Still photos are a must. Perhaps audio of the trip on another part of the site. But for the main video I figure I must ask the question of what was seen. That's what the people would want, I think. To get in insane view in sane talk. That kinda thing, man. Music? Maybe. I don't know. How terribly confusing.

How are you going to make your audience interested in the story you are telling? Why should they care?
To make my audience interested, I would make them more involved in the story. For instance, me and my group memeber are doing it on summer fashion. Everyone is eventually going to go summer shopping or at least pick up a few things, so they wont be hot. So we should focus on finding clothes and styles that are cool to wear and affordable.

The way I plan on making my audience interested in the story I will tell is by defintiley pulling on the heart strings on everyone who will be witness to it. My subject is rather interesting yet at the same time it will probably make someone cry. Since the subject is about how animal shelters are in danger of shuting down due to the economic crisis it won't be difficult to get people interested. My audience should find my project interesting because alot of them probably have pets. Some might have animals that they can no longer take care of. Knowing this I find it very exciting to get started on my project.
04/06/09
I can make the audience interested in what im telling by in my video portion of my project i can put together things that can be intriguing to them such as maybe people telling or saying why they like these type of fashion styles and why do they dress in these different styles. I can put in photos of new fashion styles or styles that are in today or that are going to be coming up for lets say summer or something.
Journal 4/6/09
We are going to make our audience interested in our story by showing how they too can be affected by Salmonella. Showing them that anyone can be touched by it makes people feel vulnerable and more inclined to find out more so they can prevent it from happening to themselves or their family members.
That'll make them care, especially since we're including kids in our video. It'll hit close to home and make them want to know what pre-cautions and solutions there are.

Audience Interest
I'm going to make my audience interested in my project becasue my work should be entertaining. I plan to have interviews over photo slide shows, and live video. I think that this continual work should keep the viewers attention and interest. And theres going to be five differenet links. Furthermore, the audience should care becasue this multimedia project is going to show them the easy things they can do in the IE for free. The interviews, pictures, and videos will show them that these things are fun, free, and local.
Why should the audience care?
The audience should care about events such as the Zapata march. Because its part of history and should be recognized, so we can learn from each other and crush racism. When we communicate through our history we will be able to communicate with each other and realize we are one people.
"Consideration," apparently...
I know for sure that Jimmy and I will utilize video to demonstrate the competitive aspect of the game -- like actual video of the game being played at a high level. The speed and precision of the game alone should entice viewers and appeal to the action-oriente side. Outside of that, hmm... I suppose we could follow in the footsteps of the other examples we've seen and show colorful, vivid still photographs that go along with the audio overlapping. It's a good question because these decisions shape the entire project; it's worth planning out.
Interested? you should be.........
Well it is going to be hard getting a large audience interested on a diet. But if I include actual stories of people that have done this diet then that is where the interest comes in. Also if I include the personal aspects of maybe before and after shots then people will feel motivated to go on and read more.
The audio portion of it scares me a little. Just becasue there is no real audio in what I am doing, the ambiance that is provided in this story is that of a grocery store, and that does not seem too enticing.

..eureka!
How are you going to make your audience interested in the story you are telling? why should they care?
i will show them a certain angle on the issue, for example from the spine report i would use medical facts to grasp readers attention. I would show an x ray scan and highlight the main points where her ailment lies then use a transitional clip of her sitting down drinking something with her brother. ^_^
show statistical data to demonstrate prevalance in a certain population. Also, i would try to tell the audience how she got to where she is now. What happened, was it genetic? accidental? etc.
i believe then we can truly catch the viewers attention.

consideration.
I have been thinking hard on this assignment, since its very complicated. (The issue of recording someone on camera and posting it online is a very sensitive issue, since many don't like to be recorded or exposed.)
thankfully!
I got a story.
I am going to do a piece on my sister's first car accident (her account etc, also her boyfriend's account) since i found it very interesting that he almost got into an accident trying to get to the scene of the crime.
how will i straighten this story? well, i was thinking of filming the site, her interview as a voice over while showing scenes of the place of the accident and her car. And her face also, while she is talking once in a while. the length about 3mns.
*sorry, for not attending class. Got called from work.

Best portion for videotaping
WE amilcar and hortencia will be taping a protest. It will give a first hand account of a march.
Consideration, you say?
After considering my story and the best way to tell it...ahahahah! Yeah, yeah. Strange days at least. Wondering, wondering...video. Stills thrown in, audio for monologues, but I need video to capture the unnatral state of child-like exploration in the subject. Being as this story has not happened to anyone in any capacity save for in my head, the main benifit in the video would be to show the subject acting alltogether strangely, but not terribly unnatural. A state of being half in his own world and half within the real world, I'm hoping for. A freakout...I'm not sure if I could show that to others with no guilt. Screams, names, rants. Best for audio, I think. Maybe. I'm not entirely sure. This is something completely unlike I have ever attempted before.
Multimedia Project 4/01/09
After I considered the story we wanted to tell we considered that the best part that could be displayed could be the parts where we go into detail about the different types of fashion trends that there are right now
I feel on our team (Sahar/producer and Greg/producer), the portion of the story best for video is show casing an expert answering questions. Also video with a voice over. The video will depict children eating p&j sandwiches. It will also contain adults eating peanut and pistachio products. The video will and should be reviting, compling as well as moving.

For my project on the top 5 things to do for free in the IE, I am going to tell video through the #4 thing, which is clubs. I figure its going to be better to actually see what goes on at clubs, what kind of music they play, and what kinds of people are there. I am also going to show video through the tp thing to do which is special events. The special events I am going to cover is the car show in San Bernadino, Dance shows at the convention center, and the game nights at the library. Showing these events through video is going to show the exact things that go on and will let people know if they're interested or not.
Which portion would make a better video?
I am excited to do the video portion of my project on the grocery store. Yeah, it sounds pretty boring but to be honest i think it will be the best part of the story.
My story is on the RAW food diet. I met a guy who lives on the RAW food diet and I believe that it is interesting to see how serious he is. For the video portion I will be going with him grocery shopping and seeing what he buys, the totals, and what kind of recipes he could do.
Another idea that I had was to make a video of him preparing the food also. Kinda like a cooking show, and having his voice making the experience real life.

I think that the best way to tell my story will be by using stills and video. My story is about a type of performance, and i think for people to understand what in entails they would have to see it visually. For my interviews i think i might be able to do an audio with still pictures to show the people who are talking. I think i want to used still pictures to show the costumes and the females in their outfits. I want to use video for when they are practicing and doing their performances, to also show the reaction of the crowd and the ambiance of the show. I think that my viewer would find it very entertaining and would understand more of what burlesque is all about.

After considering our (Greg & I) story and the best way to tell it, we determined two parts of our project would be best told using video. The first video will be used to describe the current state of Salmonella outbreaks because it would grab the readers' attention and make them inclined to go on with the story. The second video will be an interview with an expert on Salmonella (possibly a scientist or doctor) on how outbreaks like the ones happening currently can be avoided. We chose to do a video interview to legitimize the solutions, since you can see that a professional is making the suggestions.
